## A Historic Rally in the Making

On Thursday, July 30, 2026, Microsoft delivered a moment that will be remembered in Wall Street history. The company's shares surged more than 15%, lifting its market capitalization to approximately **$3.35 trillion** . The nearly $450 billion gain—some reports placed it as high as $485 billion—eclipsed the previous corporate record set by Nvidia, which added $441 billion on April 9, 2025 .

It was Microsoft's largest single-day percentage move since October 2008, and the stock's weekly advance of 18.18% marked its strongest performance since 2000 . The rally added more than $450 billion to Microsoft's market cap, reducing its 2026 decline to about 5% .

## The Numbers That Matter: Record-Breaking Quarter

The catalyst for the historic rally was a fiscal fourth-quarter earnings report that exceeded Wall Street expectations across nearly every metric .

| Metric | Q4 2026 | YoY Change | Consensus |

|--------|---------|------------|-----------|

| **Revenue** | $90.01 billion | +18% | $87.6 billion  |

| **Adjusted EPS** | $4.74 | +23% | $4.24  |

| **Microsoft Cloud Revenue** | $59.3 billion | +27% | — |

| **Intelligent Cloud Revenue** | $39.3 billion | +32% | — |

| **Azure Growth (Constant Currency)** | 43% | — | ~40%  |

For the full fiscal year, revenue surpassed **$331 billion**, operating income exceeded **$155 billion**, and **Azure's annual revenue crossed $100 billion for the first time** . Microsoft Cloud revenue for the year exceeded **$214 billion** .

## Why the Market Rewarded Microsoft

The rally reflected a fundamental shift in investor sentiment. For months, Microsoft shares faced pressure as investors questioned whether the company's aggressive AI-related capital expenditures—expected to exceed $850 billion across the hyperscalers—would generate sufficient returns . The stock had been down more than 18% year-to-date before Wednesday's close .

The earnings report provided the evidence investors were waiting for . Azure revenue growth accelerated to 43%, beating the roughly 40% consensus estimate, while the company forecast Azure growth of approximately 45% for the first quarter of fiscal 2027—well above analyst expectations of 40.92% .

"Microsoft reported a very strong quarter and it struck the tone markets are looking to hear as the key drivers of growth came from the cloud and AI divisions," said Brian Mulberry, chief market strategist at Zacks Investment Management .

Copilot adoption also surged, with paid seats exceeding **30 million**, while **GitHub Copilot surpassed 50 million users** and **Agent365 registered nearly 40 million agents** just two months after its launch .

## The CapEx Conundrum: Spending That Pays Off

Microsoft's spending plans remain aggressive. The company expects capital expenditures of **$50 billion** for the fiscal first quarter of 2027 and approximately **$175 billion** for the 2026 calendar year . While the adjusted capex figure was revised downward from $190 billion due to accounting changes, the actual investment plan remains unchanged .

The results suggest the payoff is already underway. Commercial remaining performance obligation (RPO) rose 84% year-over-year to **$678 billion**, providing strong visibility into future revenue . Importantly, the sequential increase came entirely from customers outside Frontier Model companies, while RPO excluding OpenAI still grew 25% .

The stock's Thursday rally represents the single biggest one-day gain since 2008, when Microsoft's stock increased 19%, according to Jefferies .

## What This Means for Investors

For shareholders, the rally was a long-awaited validation of CEO Satya Nadella's strategy of converting AI spending into rising revenue growth . At least nine brokerages raised their price targets, lifting the average target to $560.90 .

However, as one analyst noted, "rallies aren't forever" . The stock's jump from its 52-week low means the risk/reward dynamic has shifted. For long-term investors, Microsoft remains a "no-brainer buy" at current levels, but the run-up also suggests the most obvious buying opportunity has passed .
